In many of his works, Kay Walkowiak explores the historically and socio-culturally defined use of form and questions its functional setting as a projection surface for timeless utopias. The Neuer Kunstverein Wien is showing Walkowiak's filmic works "Drifters" (2022), "Traces of Time" (2021) and "The Muse" (2020), which were created in the last 4 years.

"The Muse"

In Walkowiak's short film "The Muse", a young man in the gravitational field of an object—Brâncusi's "Sleeping Muse" (1910) —and his love for it, appear like a pair of orbiting celestial Bodies. "The Muse" is a love story that tells of the human longing for an everlasting love, which, in the end, is nothing more than the impossible attempt to overcome one's own transience by turning to a seemingly autonomous abstract form.

"Traces of Time"

"Traces of Time" is an art film about the experience, the passing, and the notion of time. With an artistic eye and against the background of an intercultural dialogue, the film approaches the cultural-historical notions of time in India and their expression in the organic traces left by the flowing movement of everyday life in an Asian culture.

"Drifters"

The video "Drifters" is the documentation of a precisely constructed situation that combines natural settings with a minimalist intervention. The immersive video work shows a white geometric shape on a leaf moving in the wind. The white element appears incongruous as a formal antithesis in this seemingly untouched landscape while merging through the meditative-looking movement.

Kay Walkowiak, born in 1980 in Salzburg, lives and works in Vienna. He studied Sculpture and Multimedia at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Photography and Video Art at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Expanded Expression at the Zokei University in Tokyo and Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Vienna. Walkowiak’s work is a complex mixture of installation, sculpture, video art and photography and combines conceptual and post minimal strategies. Walkowiak has participated in various international group exhibitions since 2004, most recently at the Kunsthalle Tübingen (2023). Solo exhibitions include the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, Bank Austria Kunstforum Vienna, the Soulangh Art Space in Tainan, the Austrian Cultural Forum in New Delhi, the Node Gallery in Tokyo and the Jim Thompson Art Center in Bangkok.
