With the exhibition 'Painting Is Not the Issue' the Neue Kunstverein Wien confronts the concept of painting in the context of performative art practice with specific hermetic structures of the art field; a reflection that painting does not function solely in a media-specific way, but asserts its particularities in intermedial with-, against-, and for-one another.

For the duration of the exhibition, the Neue Kunstverein Wien will serve as a discursive laboratory in which sign-like, space-consuming, cinematic, and above all, situation-reflexive art practice explores the coherence of painting and thus offers viewers an experimental space for their own constructions of the gaze. In various formats, the collaboration of the artists Iris Dittler, Kerstin von Gabain, and Evelyn Plaschg, the ever-growing discrepancies between neoliberal conditions and artistic marketing strategies are discussed.
